Transcript of the Conversation

Master: Look at you carrying so many bags of food. Is it your turn to help out in the kitchen?

Young Monk: Yes, so I went to the market early this morning to buy vegetables. Speaking of that, when I passed by a vegetable stall, I saw a long line of people. When I got closer, I realized it was because the vendor was having a vegetable sale. Since the typhoon passed, many vegetables spoiled, causing prices to spike. This big discount sale immediately attracted a crowd of people scrambling to buy, completely ignoring the courtesy of lining up. Many people were pushing and shoving in the chaos, causing some to fall or get injured. Even worse, some people stuffed large bundles of vegetables into their shopping bags, leaving nothing for those behind them. They even blamed others for being too slow and said it was their own fault. Don’t you think that’s just outrageous?

Master: The sentient beings are defiled by the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and blown about by the Eight Winds. They are completely unaware that their behavior has already strayed far from the path of spiritual practice. The reason people behave in such disgraceful ways is because they do not understand what true practice of cultivation is. They don’t realize that cultivation means correcting our speech and actions, as well as our thoughts and intentions, in daily life. “Cultivation” means correcting ourselves, and “practice” refers to our actions. Therefore, to correct our behavior is to cultivate. This is not just empty talk, it must be done earnestly and genuinely.

Young Monk: You’re absolutely right. Looking back, I realize I shouldn’t have gotten so angry either. Though the public’s behavior is not worthy of imitation, I also shouldn’t harbor anger or lose my compassion for sentient beings. In doing so, I would also have strayed from the compassionate heart of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
