A Decade of Struggle and Transformation: How H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s Teachings Helped Me Save My Marriage Through Buddhist Practice

Many people face family opposition when they begin learning Buddhism. In this true story, one woman shares how she overcame her husband’s resistance and saved her marriage through the compassion and wisdom found in the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.

As night fell and a cool breeze rose, people gradually stepped out of their homes to enjoy the evening. The pedestrian paths along the scenic banks of the ancient Yellow River bustled with life.

Under the dim streetlights, a woman in a flowing dress strolled arm in arm with her husband. Their soft whispers mingled with gentle music in the air—like a couple in their first love, savoring a world of just the two of them.

But in fact, they weren’t a young couple. They were elderly. The woman, named Wanqing, though already in her sixties, carried herself like a lady in her prime. With a graceful figure and refined manners, she wore her age well. Despite her graying hair, her face bore very few wrinkles.

Wanqing knew well that this peaceful and romantic moment, walking with her husband in the park, had not come easily. This heartfelt story dates back to ten years ago…

Ten years ago, Wanqing embarked on her journey into Buddhism—but met with her husband Dali’s strong opposition. Every time she went to the temple to attend a Dharma assembly, Dali would get drunk and collapse at the temple gates crying. Fellow lay practitioners, helpless in the situation, had to send word asking Wanqing to set aside her scriptures and return home to assist her husband.

To Dali, Wanqing stepping into the temple felt like a sword piercing his heart—an unbearable and heartbreaking pain. He drowned himself in alcohol, yet it only deepened his sorrow. Already a quiet man, he now turned into a bottle of silent wine—miserable and withdrawn.

Despite her work and household duties, Wanqing continued to participate in temple activities. Over time, Dali’s patience wore thin. He began using violence to stop her from going out. She couldn’t understand—what was so wrong with going to the temple, reciting sutras, and bowing to the Buddha? Wasn’t that far healthier than gossiping with neighbors or playing mahjong? Dali couldn’t give any reason—he just wouldn’t let her go.

Many times, Wanqing considered leaving him. He drank excessively, became aggressive after drinking, and spewed abusive words. How could she continue living like this? With such an unreasonable man, years of mental and physical exhaustion had drained all the joy from her life. Not even visiting the temple could bring her peace. She fell into a spiral of depression and illness.

She searched and searched, aimlessly passing her days in sorrow. She visited Mount Putuo three times, as well as Mount Wutai, Mount Emei, and Mount Jiuhua, hoping to find a path of liberation.

Eventually, Dali fell ill. He stopped eating, only drank, and grew skinny as a stick. He rarely spoke, and when he did, he cursed.

Wanqing juggled work and caregiving—taking him to and from hospitals, attending to all his needs. She took care of his medication, injections, meals, and hygiene. Watching his wife suffer in silence, working tirelessly for his sake, Dali began to soften a little from his sickbed. His harsh words grew less frequent, though he still insisted on drinking a pound of liquor twice a day.

Years of caregiving aged Wanqing considerably. But only reciting the Buddha’s name could bring her inner calm. She often chanted:
“Namo Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva!”
and prayed for guidance, hoping her husband would recover soon.

Namo Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva!

With sincerity, blessings arrived. Wanqing obtained the prerecorded dharma discourses of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. In less than six months, she had attentively listened to more than 200 discs from six major series and other supplementary teachings. She felt as though a veil had been lifted—it was like sweet dew poured on her soul. She suddenly understood so many things she hadn’t before.

“True Buddhist cultivation takes place in everyday life — it is not separate from worldly awareness.
— H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

She realized that studying Buddhism isn’t just about going to temples, lighting incense, or joining ceremonies. True Buddhist practice is found in daily life.

The Role of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s Teachings in My Transformation

Through reflecting on the teachings from “A Brief Explanation of Evil and Wrong Views” by H.H Dorje Chang Buddha III, Wanqing saw how her own ignorance had unintentionally hurt her husband. A true Buddhist practitioner must bring joy to their family and strive to benefit others—not just pursue personal goals while ignoring the suffering of loved ones.

With this newfound wisdom, Wanqing no longer reacted to her husband’s harshness with mere endurance. She practiced patient forbearance with grace. She stopped mentioning Buddhism in front of her husband and rarely attended temple events anymore. Instead, she devoted herself to caring for her husband and nurturing their family, doing her best not to cause him distress.

In Wanqing’s view, she only set aside the appearance of Buddhist practice—not its essence. Real cultivation means putting the Buddha’s teachings into action through speech, behavior, and thoughts in every moment of daily life. If you focus only on appearances and neglect your family’s pain, you’re not truly practicing the Dharma.

Life’s hardships became her path to spiritual growth. Ten years passed. With sincere cultivation and deep love for her husband, Wanqing gradually softened his heart. Slowly, he stopped opposing her Buddhist practice.

Today, their home is harmonious. When Wanqing goes out to seek Dharma or attend Buddhist events, Dali stays home and sometimes sends her Buddhist music to enjoy. When she’s home busy with Buddhist tasks, Dali voluntarily shops and cooks for her. Their relatives, neighbors, and coworkers all admire the peaceful and joyful life they now share. They praise Wanqing for how her decade of Buddhist cultivation not only transformed herself—but also her husband.

This true story shows how the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III can bring light to even the darkest family struggles. Through true cultivation and compassion, real-life suffering was transformed into peace, harmony, and spiritual growth.
